Drug Dependence Vs. Drug Abuse
The words drug abuse and drug dependency are often used interchangeably, but in reality, there is a difference between abuse of a drug and dependency. Dependency does begin with drug abuse, but addiction is much more than a lot of drug use.
Drug abuse is basically the repeated or uncontrolled use of controlled substances. Another definition that you could use is to say that it is the habitual misuse of a drug. This definition includes the use of drugs for purposes other than what they were intended. In fact, drug misuse has a range of definitions, but all suggest disapproval at the use or overuse of a drug for non-therapeutic reasons.
On the other hand drug addiction happens when a persons body becomes addicted to having that chemical in their system and when they don’t have it they can suffer from withdrawls that cause physical and real adverse symptoms to the person addicted. Lots of the drugs out there mess with the way that the brain function and alter it to where it cannot function correctly without the drug.
People who are addicted to drugs, will use the drug no matter what type of adverse health reactions they get from doing so. They disregard their personal health in favor of continuing the feeling that they get when they are on their drug of choice. Stopping usage is just not a viable option for them. When a person reaches this point with their drug abuse, it becomes an addiction and must be dealt with accordingly.
Understanding drug abuse and addiction can help in preventing drug use to rise to problem proportions. You know precisely what type of dependency you are dealing with, it makes it quite a lot easier to find options for treatment.
Whether you or a loved one is abusing drugs or are addicted to drugs, drug treatment programs needs to be sought as soon as possible to help ward off serious health implications. Drug treatment can profoundly affect both the user and society. Giving these people the help they need and getting them off of drugs helps to improve the society as a whole as it makes people who were not functional members of society into people who can now get along in society and creates a more peaceful community.
Drug abuse is overall the number one cause of deaths and illness that are preventable in the United States. It doesn t matter if we talk about cocaine, heroin, or alcohol, a drug is a drug and those drugs cause problems with the human body. Use of these things is preventable and educating people is the first step in that.
The problem of drug misuse and dependency are true blight on our society. Both dependency and drug abuse have been around forever, and they are likely to be around quite a lot longer, but understanding the difference between these two will allow you to see the signs in someone who is at risk and give you the chance to possibly get them on the road to healing.
