Drug and alcohol addiction is the most upcoming problem in today’s time.
When a person gets addicted to substance abuse, we hope that one day he himself will give up the habit after realization, but that normally doesn’t happen, even after so much of pleading done by the family and friends.
I learned of it in the most horrible way possible – he had overdosed, and the entire event was followed by months of him in detox and rehabilitation, none of us being able to see him because, at the time, we had been too young. When we asked him, years later, what had driven him to it, his answer was a simple: "I dunno."
The effective drug or alcohol addiction intervention does not involve forcing the drug addicted person for cure, but to change his attitude towards addiction. Until the person decides for himself this path of cure he cannot develop the will to lose this addiction of drug and alcohol. An intervention can be about enlightening an individual about the effects of alcohol and drugs, one on one session with addict and laying of some goals for a change in behavior. Intervention service providers are the experts who have treated thousands of drug addict patients.
Billions of people are affected by substance abuse disorder all over the world – not all of them may be the ones abusing the substances, but having loved ones who suffer from substance abuse disorder would most certainly hit them in the ensuing crossfire. More often than not, it is the people who love them that bear the brunt of a substance abuser’s violent mood swings. It is they who are affected by the financial woes that are caused by the mis-allocated funds caused by their need to feed their addiction.
They are the ones who would have to deal with the news of their loved one being arrested for one reason or another, all ultimately drug-related. And, if they were less lucky than I, they would be the ones who would be burying a beloved father or mother, child or relative, friend or lover.
Substance abuse may sound cool. It may mean that certain people may hang out with you. It may even mean that you wouldn’t have to deal with the bad things that are happening in your life. But it will never be safe, and it will never be fair – not for you, and not to those who love you.
